Self-esteem is the valuation that each human being has about himself and what he can become, as a result of a mixture of physical, emotional and sentimental factors faced throughout life and which have been molded to his personality . Regarding its more formal definition, it can be said that self-esteem is the love that we have just dispersed about ourselves.
An appreciation that evolves through the different periods of life and in which each one faces the obstacles that present themselves
This process starts at approximately 5 or 6 years of life, when we start to create an idea of ourselves, our peers and older people such as parents, family and teachers. However, like any process by definition, it is not a static phenomenon that is learned or fixed, there is no way to modify it; on the contrary, it can be modified and improved thanks to feedbacks that include constructive criticism and that are part of our closest environment, as well as being fundamental parts in building our self-esteem.
In fact, although about 90% of the complementary grades that define personality during the first five years of life, according to current theories, many of the life experiences that occur in the years after childhood, including during adolescence, are determinant in genesis of the self-esteem process. This fact is attributed to the personality, in addition to its defined and stable components, including adaptable and “plastic” elements, among which the contributions of the environment in which we live stand out.
The challenge of controlling feelings and adapting to events that impact our lives
However, low self-esteem can be the trigger of many psychological problems, such as depression, neurosis, shyness, shame, among others, and one of the main topics to be discussed and accepted in a therapy with a psychology professional . For example, the lack of confidence, the devaluation promoted by the hateful comparison with someone are some of the factors that trigger low self-esteem or sometimes zero. This reality causes a marked decrease in quality of life , which can be expressed in physical, psychological and fundamentally social health problems.
The role of family and friends in the fight against self-esteem issues
Even so, in adolescents and adults, psychological therapies, especially tools from the cognitive-behavioral spectrum, are considered very useful resources for focusing on the decline in self-esteem. It is worth recognizing that the arts, especially music and theater, are interesting ways of approaching people with a tendency to low self-esteem, as they allow the emergence of the conscious plane in countless unconscious processes that can be harmful; its only expression under the sublimation that represents the arts are a remarkable way of optimizing the fall of self-esteem, generating the possibility of growth for the people affected and for others who like art.
